Ban on private keeping of bears due to FOUR PAWS' efforts

The construction of the BEAR SANCTUARY Prishtina has finally enabled the ban on private keeping of bears - already in force since 2010 - to be properly enacted in 2013. The City of Prishtina has provided the land for this unique project. Kosovo as well as the City of Prishtina will continue to support FOUR PAWS; in 2015 the extension of the road to the sanctuary will be financed.

The new huge outdoor enclosures are almost 5 hectars of size.

Kassandra first rescued restaurant bear

The former restaurant bear Kassandra became the first from 13 abused bears, FOUR PAWS was able to rescue from captivity. The Austrian Ambassador to Kosovo, Dr. Johann Brieger and his wife Roswitha informed FOUR PAWS about the weak female bear, which was simply abandoned from her owner after the close-down of his restaurant.

Visitor centre at BEAR SANCTUARY Prishtina

In the future, the FOUR PWAS BEAR SANCTUARY shall be more attractive for visitors either. Heli Dungler, founder and president of FOUR PAWS: "On the next round a comprehensive visitor centre is planned, which will inform the Kosovo population and interested tourists about species-appropriate bear keeping and about how humans and bears can live together in peace."
