Last Bulgarian Circus Lions on Their Way to Freedom

FOUR PAWS Bulgaria and the Born Free Foundation, in a joint initiative, transported two former Bulgarian circus lions to their temporary home. An expert team of veterinarians and animal handlers were on site to ensure the safe movement of the animals.

Seven-year-old brothers Jora and Black have not been used in performances since a full ban on wild mammals in circus entered into force in Bulgaria in 2015. These fine-featured animals spent the last months in a metal beast wagon in the premise of their owner near the capital, Sofia, until authorities and animal welfare charities could find a solution for them. They were housed alongside a young female tigress, Varvara, who will soon be transported to a FOUR PAWS rescue centre in Germany.

The owners of the animals have fully co-operated with the move and on completion of paperwork, the long-term plans are for the lions to be rehomed to the Born Free Foundation's rescue centre at Shamwari, in the Eastern Cape, South Africa. Here they will be offered spacious natural enclosures to give them the dignity and rich environment essential to their needs.
