On December 29th an emergency response team of the international animal welfare organization FOUR PAWS has returned from the devastated Bulgarian village Hitrino. After a three-day stay, our team was able to provide more than 13 tons of food for farm and domestic animals. 30 households with 575 animals were supplied with food for the next month. FOUR PAWS was the only organization that provided assistance to the animals in the village.

After the explosion on 10.12.2016 at Hitrino an emergency was declared and the whole village was evacuated. Many of the local population that makes their living with livestock farming were forced to leave their animals in the barns and inside their homes without food and fresh water. Almost all stocks of food and fodder were destroyed and two weeks after the tragedy only the police and fire department had access to the village. FOUR PAWS was among the first permitted after the blockade in Hitrino was lifted.

In disaster situations, as the one in the Bulgarian village Hitrino, the need for food for the animals is urgent. In the last years FOUR PAWS has organized rescue missions after the floods in Mizia, Debelets and Kilifarevo in Bulgaria as well as in Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina. Last year the international animal welfare organization had an emergency mission in Myanmar after the floods and in 2013 in the Philippines after the typhoon “Haiyan.”
