FOUR PAWS provided 150 tons of food for animals in Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina

The Bulgarian team, which participated in the disaster relief mission, has returned

More than 150 tons of concentric fodder for farm animals and food for companion animals (dogs and cats) have been distributed by the international animal welfare organization FOUR PAWS during its three weeks disaster relief mission after the floods in Serbia and Bosnia. Teams of the organization were on site in the area of Obrenovac and Jamena (Serbia) and Bijeljina (Bosnia and Herzegovina). Furthermore, FOUR PAWS sent mobile animal clinic, in which medical treatment was provided for animals affected by the floods. The team of the organization included experts from several European countries, including 6 members from Bulgaria, who are already back home.

“FOUR PAWS is the only animal welfare organization which had permission to help the affected animals in the restricted areas of Obrenovaz” says Dr. Marina Ivanova. More than 170 dogs and cats were medically treated in the mobile clinic of the organization and tens of companion and farm animals were provided with medical care on site. Many residents of Obrenovac had to leave their companion animals behind. We managed to take away quite a few of them from the city and bring them back to their owners. We provided food and water for a lot of these animals until the return of their owners. We were also focused on the medical treatment of farm animals, which were sick because of the floods.

According to Serbian government, the damages from the floods will cost more than 1 billion euro and the affected directly and indirectly in the country are more than 1.5 million people. The governments of Bosnia and Herzegovina estimated that the damages will cost more than those during the war in 1992-95. Thousands of farmers are the most affected from the disaster in Serbia, as well as in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Most of their crops are destroyed and they are in urgent need of food. They have to sell their farm animals at knock-out price or rely on the government’s help.

“A person can hardly imagine the size of the disaster and the consequences after it. It is not only about the casualties who have lost their lives to it, the destroyed possessions and drowned animals” says Yavor Gechev from FOUR PAWS. “In Serbia more than 70 000 hectars agricultural fields have been flooded and only in the area of Bijeljina in Bosnia and Herzegovina – more than 30 000 hectars. The destroyed crops and stored fodder inevitably will lead to a crisis in food supply. Tens of thousands of animals were left without food because there was no supply. Thanks to our help a lot of farmers will be able to cope with the difficult situation at least for the first few days after the floods.
